Mexico,
D.F., October 19, 2009.- In the auditorium of the National Institute
of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN), the Secretary of Health, Dr. Jose Angel
Cordova Villalobos gave possession to Dr. Xavier Soberon Mainero as the
new Director General of the Institute for the period 2009-2014,
replacing Dr. Gerardo Jimenez Sanchez.

The
ceremony was attended by Dr. Julio Sotelo Morales, President of the
Coordinating Committee of National Institutes of Health and High
Speciality Hospitals; Dr. Gerardo Jimenez Sanchez, Director General of
INMEGEN outgoing (2004-2009); Juan Carlos Romero Hicks; Director
General of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT);
Directors of the National Institutes of Health and members of the
scientific and academic comunity of Mexico.
Minister of
Health, Dr. Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos highlighted that the creation
of INMEGEN allowed to Mexico to start on time in an area as important
to the nation, such as Genomic Medicine. He also stressed that the
achivements which has been reach over these first five years, have
placed the Institute as a landmark in Latin America and world around
genomics research, one example is the Mexican Genome Diversity Project,
which laid the foundations for the development of a more preventive
medicine and individualized. Finally, he urged to continue working on
the challenges still remain to be resolved, such as legislative
aspects, among others.
For
his part, Dr. Xavier Soberon Mainero noted that Consortium members and
founders have managed that INMEGEN become a strategic piece in the
country; but it is a young Institution that lacks road ahead;
therefore, he reiterated his commitment to this cause and said that the
ingredients to consolidate INMEGEN as an Institution of excellence,
come from the joint efforts of the different partners of the Institute.
Likewise, Dr. Soberon Mainero emphasized that this appointment is a
privilege and a responsibility he will know track and was confident
that his enthusiasm become facts at the pace that the circumstances
require.

Dr.
Jimenez Sanchez recalled that INMEGEN was created thorugh the efforts
of many institutions and individuals, which thanked them for their
support during his management and with which he shares great
achievements during these first five years, some of them are: the
development of 42 projects of scientific research aimed at national
health problems, more than 55 publications, 20 undergraduate and 455
postgraduate taught students, 128 students in temporary residence and
an improvement over 80 % in the construction of the permanent
herdquarters, among other.
Finally, Dr. Julio Sotelo added
that today begins a new stage for INMEGEN, and certainly the best
candidate was chosen Director General of the Institute, as determined
by the members of the Governing Board. Today, a cycle is completed and
opens another to continue the development of genomic medicine, a field
that will give surprising answers to ancient questions.
